Palazzo dei Mercanti is located in the old town centre of Ascoli Piceno, within a short walking distance from Piazza del Popolo, the popular meeting place of the Ascolani since medieval times. The building faces onto Corso Trento e Trieste, an important street of the old town centre which crosses Corso G. Mazzini, the old “decuman”.
The entire rear face of Palazzo dei Mercanti gives onto “Rua A. Vipera”, which according to oral history, used to be a main street centuries ago. It is dedicated to the noble architect from Ascoli, Antonio Vipera, who drew the first plans for the church of San Francesco. Palazzo dei Mercanti is built on the remains of an old building which in past centuries used to house the monastery of Sant’Egidio nuns. Of the original palazzo only the atrium remains, dating back to the 16th century. Following restoration works, it can now be properly admired a simple travertine staircase leaning against the front wall and arch leads to the first floor. From here it is possible to admire the elegant travertine columns and monogram of San Bernardino, protector of the nuns, depicting a blazing sun with the Christogram JHS (Jesus Hominum Salvator) in the centre.
The Residence is also adjacent to what once was Palazzo Marcucci, birthplace of the venerable Francesco Antonio Marcucci, founder of the Congregation of the Pious Worker Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and commemorated with a plaque at the beginning of Via A. Vipera. Some rooms are in part of this building. The hotel offers a wellness area to its guests with sauna, Turkish bath, emotional shower, Jacuzzi hot tube and chromo-therapic showers. The synergy of water, aromas, heat and music soothe body and soul.
Palazzo dei Mercanti offers many services for bikers: garage, washing and drying machines, mechanics and spare parts, guides and digital maps.
